Every year on April 1st, April Fools’ Day is celebrated across the world with tremendous zeal. People make fun of each other, commit practical jokes, and make fun of one other without feeling guilty on this day. People tell jokes and makeup hoaxes to make people laugh, and then reveal their gags by yelling and shouting ‘April Fool’ at their victims. It not only causes people to laugh and smile, but it also brings out the joker or comic in you.

April Fools’ Day is regarded as one of the funniest days of the year. It is enthusiastically celebrated by both youngsters and adults. The day was initially observed in European countries, but it quickly became an annual event across the world. In most countries, it is merely a regular day, however in Odesa, Ukraine, it is an official city holiday.

April Fool’s Day: Where does it come from?

April Fools’ Day is unquestionably one of the most widely recognized non-religious holidays in Western countries. Historians are still split on where it came from.

According to historians, this wonderful event began around the year 1582. It was the year that Pope Gregory XIII instituted the Georgian calendar, which replaced the Julian Calendar.

Then France adopted the new calendar, declaring the New Year to begin on January 1st. Previously, the Julian Calendar declared the New Year to begin on the Spring Equinox, which occurs at the end of March or the beginning of April.

Even after converting to a new calendar, French folks continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1st. People who continued to celebrate New Year in April were labeled as “April Fools.” On April 1st, those who forgot to celebrate New Year’s Day were humiliated and had paper fish pasted on their backs, and they were dubbed ‘April Fools’ by the rest of the community.

Some historians believe the day is also connected to the spring festival of Hilaria, which means joyous in Latin and was held around March 25 in ancient Rome. Games, processions, and masquerades were all part of the festivities.

Importance of April Fool’s Day

The significance of April Fools’ Day is that it is a day when people enjoy playing innocent pranks on others. It relieves tension and makes people happy. On April Fool’s Day, individuals in France cling a paper fish to their backs while screaming ‘April Fool’. In Greece, it is thought that successfully pranking someone on this day will bring the prankster good luck. Rainfall on April 1 is believed to have healing power.
