Mahant Bajrang Muni was arrested by Sitapur Police on Wednesday, almost four days after an FIR was filed against him in connection with a viral video clip in which he reportedly made inflammatory statements and allegedly threatened Muslim women to rape.
Bajrang Muni was detained from the Kamalapur police station on the Lucknow-Sitapur route, according to Sitapur Superintendent of Police RP Singh. “We’ve brought him before a magistrate, and he’ll be sentenced to prison,” Singh said.
The mahant was charged with sexual harassment by words, gestures, or acts meant to offend a woman’s modesty, as well as speaking statements with the deliberate intent to offend anyone’s religious beliefs. A dy SP-rank officer was later assigned to the case.
Charges Pressed Against Muni
UP Police have detained Mahant Bajrang Muni Das in connection with a complaint filed against him under Sections 153A, 295A, 298, 354A, 504, and 509 of the Indian Penal Code for his controversial remarks against Muslim women.
Bajrang Muni is the manager of the Kamaal Sarai Sangath in Khairabad, according to the police. He was moved around a year and a half ago and had made multiple provocative statements.
When the National Commission for Women (NCW) took note of the remarks and requested the arrest of the offenders on April 9, the Sitapur Police jumped into action.
NCW chairman Rekha Sharma also wrote to the UP DGP, requesting that he intervene promptly, file an FIR, and arrest the perpetrators as soon as possible.
Earlier, women from Khairabad, Sitapur took out a foot march demanding immediate arrest of Muni.
In a video that went viral on social media, Bajrang Muni was purportedly heard threatening to rape Muslim women if a single Hindu woman was mistreated. Bajrang Muni was encircled by a crowd cheering him on later in the video. Police officers were also observed near Muni’s vehicle.
