Ever since the pandemic has hit, all the theatres were shut. Now that the COVID-19 spread is on the downfall, Bollywood is back with a big release of Akshay Kumar starrer Bellbottom. Bell bottom is the first commercial film to release in cinema halls after the second wave hit India.

Bell bottom is a spy thriller based on a true story starring Akshay Kumar and Vaani Kapoor. The movie also stars Huma Qureshi and Lara Datta. Ranjit M Tewari directs the film, and it is based upon a real-life story of the hijacking of an Indian Airlines in 1984.

Although the movie has been released in theatres today, it is still unpredictable how many people would go to cinema halls to watch the film amidst the pandemic, while all other movies are being released on OTT platforms.

In an interview, MSN quoted Akshay Kumar, “The pressure is that Maharashtra is still closed and 30 per cent of the money comes from Maharashtra. And because only 50 per cent occupancy is allowed so half of the rest of the 70 per cent share is also gone. But we have to take a risk. I am keeping my fingers crossed.”

As the trailer of Bellbottom was released, with Khiladi Kumar rescuing 200 passengers from a hijacked Indian Plane, Lara Datta playing the role of India’s former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is the fascinating aspect.

While portraying such an iconic historical persona, Lara said in an interview with Indian Express, “When it came to performance, I knew I had to pull up my socks to make myself believable on screen. There was a lot of prep that went into that as well. I watched a lot of footage and archive videos of Indira Gandhi.”

“I was also lucky to get notes from my father. While he was in the Indian Air Force, he used to serve Mrs Gandhi as her personal pilot. So, he became an integral source of information for me. Through him, I got an insider perspective rather than just what was available to me through the makers and what existed on the internet,” she added.

The audience’s response to Akshay Kumar’s Bell Bottom release in cinemas is still unpredictable, but it will be exciting to know the changes in the Hindi cinema audience’s behaviour after the COVID-19.
