Since the start of the Tokyo Olympic on July 23, we all have been crossing our fingers to support our players in Japan. Be it Mary Com, PV Sindhu, Kamalpreet Kaur, our entire Hockey team (men and women) or everyone representing our nation, we all sat on toes while watching them.
But all these efforts and cheers for our team have been besmirched by the self-centred approaches from our leaders, snatching the credit from the players only and demeaning their hard work.
First such stance got struck in netizens’ eyes was when chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma wished boxer Lovlina Borgohain for qualifying for the ongoing Tokyo Olympics by putting his own photo on the congratulatory banner instead of the player herself.

This move from the CM Himanta drew huge flak and people, sarcastically on social media, started using billboard showing Himanta’s gigantic photo on it to congratulate Assam’s star player.
However, Borgohain has assured India a Broze medal and is hopeful to win gold at Olympics.
Another such example indulged the prime minister himself. Every time PM wished our players on his Twitter account, he used his own photo with the concerned player instead of giving the best possible space on their best day.
Today only, on newly launched news channel Times Now Navbharat of Times Network which is allegedly a mouth piece of the ruling party, BJP.
The channel broadcasted a show on Indian Hockey Team qualifying for Semifinal at Tokyo Olympics with sports minster Anurag Thakur as chief guest hosted by Editor in Chief, Navika Kumar.
Ironically, instead of congratulating the players themselves and appreciating their strenuous efforts, Navika chose to extend the credits to the sports minister. She said, “Apke aane k baad se medals ki bauchhar hone lagi hai (Since your appointment, medals have started pouring down)”.
“So, As Expected She started her buttering ..Afterall channel has to run”, said a twitter user.
The propensity towards Sports Minister has earned Navika heavy reprimand from the netizens.
