The Bahujan Samaj Party will work to avoid fielding ‘Bahubali’ (Robinhood) candidates in upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections, according to party supremo Mayawati, who also said that convicted gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari will not be offered a party ticket from Mau.

She added BSP state president Bhim Rajbhar will run for the Mau seat, which is now held by Mukhtar Ansari, who is incarcerated in Banda and faces multiple criminal charges against him.

In January 2017, just before UP assembly, BSP had re-inducted Mukhtar in the party saying that the charges against his are ‘politically motivated’ and ‘unproven’.

Mayawati’s declaration comes just days after Sigbatullah Ansari, Mukhtar Ansari’s brother, joined Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party.

“The BSP would avoid fielding ‘Bahubali’ and mafia types in the forthcoming assembly elections.” So, in place of Mukhtar Ansari, the name of Bhim Rajbhar, the BSP UP president, has been finalized for the Mau assembly seat “she claimed in a Hindi tweet.

Afzal Ansari, Mukhtar’s second brother, is a BSP MP who represents the Ghazipur constituency. He defeated Manoj Sinha of the BJP, who is now Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mayawati stated that the decision to not field criminal and mafia elements was made to meet the expectations of the people, and she urged party leaders to keep this in mind while selecting candidates. “So that if the government is formed, it won’t be difficult to take tough measures against such elements.”

“Along with maintaining ‘a rule of law, by law,’ the BSP’s resolve is to improve Uttar Pradesh’s image today,” she added.

She added that the BSP should be recognized as the “Sarvajan Hitay and Sarvajan Sukhay” government (universal good).

In last UP assembly election in 2017, BSP had topped the chart of candidates with most criminal cases against them. 140 candidates out of total 400, who contested in 2017 UP elections had tainted records.

So, it will be imperative to see whether Mayawati’s statement is a rhetoric or she really has what it takes to contest election without tainted personalities.
