Bumrah achieved the feat after dismissing Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella for 21 runs. Bumrah’s fifer in Tests was his eighth overall, and his first in India.
Bumrah has previously taken two five-wicket hauls each in England, the West Indies, and South Africa. In Australia, he had also taken a five-for.
In the first innings, his stats of 5 for 24 helped India thrash Sri Lanka for 109 runs.
India also grabbed a 143-run advantage after deciding to bat first in the pink-ball Test, at it scored 252 runs in first innings.
Apart from Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin each grabbed two wickets, while Axar Patel made his resurgence with a wicket.

Sri Lanka had begun their innings on Day 1 with a score of 86 for six at stumps, trailing India by 166 runs.
Shreyas Iyer top-scored for India with 92, while Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari cameoed with 39 and 31 runs, respectively.
Lasith Embuldeniya and Praveen Jayawickrama each took three wickets for Sri Lanka, while de Silva took two.
India has a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, having won the first Test by an innings and 222 runs at Mohali.
Last month, the hosts also trounced the visitors 3-0 in a T20I series.
Bumrah equals Kapil Dev’s Historic feat
Bumrah equaled the legendary Kapil Dev’s historic Test record with the maiden fifer at home, while also scripting a history on Indian soil.
Bumrah has equaled the record for most five-wicket hauls among India players with his eighth fifer in only 29 matches. Only Kapil Dev had as much five-wicket hauls among Indian seamers at this point in his career.
