An assistant police sub-inspector ASI Ram Jatan of Bihar Police was killed and at least 10 policemen were injured in an attack by the angry mob.

On Saturday, during Holi celebration in Bihar’s Bettiah, a youth named Anirudh Kumar was arrested for playing loud music. After few hours of his arrest, his dead body was found lying outside police station.

The news of the youth’s death spread like wild fire in the area. Villagers in large number started gathering at the police station. They blamed the police for torturing the youth which consecutively led to death. Soon, the agitation turned violent and clashes with police were also reported.

Agitators from other two neighbour villages also involved in the ruckus and attacked Purushottampur and Gopalpur police stations before setting Balthar setting them on fire.

In the attack by the angry mob, an assistant police sub-inspector ASI Ram Jatan was killed and at least 10 policemen were injured. The police had to resort to rounds of gun shots to disperse the mob.

“Several vehicles parked in the police station were destroyed. The official vehicle of the circle inspector of Mainatand town was also set on fire”, said, Upendra Nath Sharma, District SP.

He also added that the incident took place after the victim, who was playing loud music, was arrested on the complaint of local block development officer Meena Sharma and circle officer Manish Kumar had taken him into police custody. The police said that the boy died due to a bee sting at the police station.

Speaking over the issue, RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav told news agency ANI, “Custodial death in Bettiah is unfortunate. In earlier incidents too, the police have killed people in custody. There’s administrative anarchy in Bihar” the Free Press Journal quoted Yadav.
