Marvel Studios released a teaser on Tuesday. for “Ms. Marvel,” an upcoming Disney+ show featuring Marvel Studios’ first Muslim superhero.

The newest Marvel limited series, will premiere on June 8 and features a 16-year-old Pakistani American girl from New Jersey who struggles to fit in at school and at home until she is given superpowers.

The six-episode series follows Kamala, portrayed by Iman Vellani, as she fantasises over superheroes and creates fan fiction about them, notably the Avengers and Captain Marvel. The series is directed by filmmakers Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Meera Menon, Adil El Arbi, and Bilall Fallah.

The teaser reveals flashes of Kamala’s life before she gains her new skills, including worshipping at a mosque, attending high school, and thinking about boys.

Kamala’s powers ultimately allow her to build energy stepping stones and hit with a massive energy fist. Kamala is set to feature in the “Captain Marvel” sequel “The Marvels,” which is set to be released in February 2023.

The series was supposed to be released in late 2021, but it was pushed back due to the pandemic, which caused other Marvel films to be postponed. According to Variety, Kamala initially debuted in a Captain Marvel comic in 2013 and was granted her own solo comic book as Ms. Marvel in 2014.

Obaid-Chinoy, one of the directors of the series expressed her excitement on Instagram.

“This has been my world for the better part of the last year and a half..I cannot be more prouder of the story we are telling and the message we are sending out into the world! Believing that girls everywhere will see themselves in #MsMarvel Here’s to creating stories that represent all shades of superheroes! The future is in her hands”, she wrote.

The teaser for “Ms Marvel” follows the premiere of “Turning Red,” Pixar’s first feature-length picture directed by an Asian woman, on Disney+. Film critics and moviegoers praised the film, however there was some criticism that it was “alienating” to have a female lead of Asian descent.
