Approximately 77 were murdered daily in 2010, which translates as one murder every sixth minute, according to latest report by the National Crime Recoed Bureau.
The report say that poll bound Uttar Pradesh topped the list of states that registered maximum number of killings with 3,779 murders in 2020 following Bihar with 3,150 murders.
According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), crimes against Scheduled Caste increased by 9.4% compared to the previous year. In 2019, 45,961 cases of violence were registered against SCs. (read DALITS).
The crime rate rose from 22.8% to 25% in 2020. According to the statistics, 4,273 cases (8.5%) were registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, while 3,788 cases (7.5%) were victims of criminal intimidation.
Similarly, compared to the previous year, atrocities against Scheduled Tribes climbed by 9.3%. The number of cases rose from 7,570 in 2019 to 8,272 in 2020.
According to the data, the crime rate climbed from 7.3% in 2019 to 7.9% in 2020. The data say, there were 1,137 incidents of rape (which contributed 13.7%), followed by the attack on women with the purpose to outrage her modesty with 855 cases contributing 10.7%.

In both cases, whether it is SC or ST, the most common type of injury was ‘simple hurt,’ which accounted for 32.9% (16,543 cases) of all cases in SC and accounted for 27.2% (2,247 cases) of all cases in ST.
Cases Of Atrocities Against SCs And STs Saw A Decline In Metropolitan Areas
Atrocities against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have decreased in the metropolitan cities such as Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, and Surat.
In the metros, a total of 1,485 cases of committing a crime against Scheduled Castes (SCs) were recorded, a reduction of 10.9% from the previous year’s 1,667 incidents. With 249 cases (16.8%), criminal intimidation was the most common, followed by rape with 206 cases (13.9%) and 159 cases (10.7%) of “simple hurt.”
Similarly, there was a drop in crime against Scheduled Tribes (STs) in metropolitan areas. A total of 221 cases were reported, a drop of 14.3% from the previous year.
Rape (37 cases), followed by “simple hurt” (20 cases) which contributes 9% of total cases, and 18 cases which contributes 8.1 % under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, were the most common.
