It is very sad to learn that the man who sacrificed his life for his country without giving it second thought is not considered a martyr even after 91 years of his martyrdom.

Sardar Bhagat Singh’s great-grandson, Yadvendra Singh, had voiced his anger with the refusal of martyr status to Singh while speaking to ETV Bharat last year. He had claimed that for a long time, every attempt had been tried to get Bhagat Singh martyr status, and that the government had consistently given assurances on the subject.

Yadvendra Singh further stated that, despite meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue, Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, who gave his life for the country on purpose, has yet to be be declared a martyr.

In 2018 an RTI request was also made to find out if the government had awarded him Shaheed status and, if not, what the legal restrictions must have been.

The petitioner asked the Rashtrapati Bhavan for information, which referred his request to the Home Ministry, which then forwarded it to the National Archives for consideration.

After getting no satisfactory response, the petitioner sought advice on information disclosure from the Central Information Commission (CIC).

The Commission then suggested to the Home Ministry that it investigate whether Bhagat Singh should be declared a martyr.

It further said that if this is not possible, the government must provide a thorough reason.

All and all our Shaheed e Azam is yet be declared Shaheed by our own government. It will be interesting to see what the newly elected AAP government in Punjab which is appropriating Bhagat Singh’s legacy, can do on according Bhagat Singh a long due martyr status.
