Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) known for its academic excellence is in news for discrepancies in PhD admission at its AJK Mass Communication Research Centre.
On September 12, a total of eight students who qualified for both written and interview tests were denied admission at the last moment despite being selected in the final list released on August 11, 2022.
On Aug 11, the university invited 19 candidates to take admission into PhD course at the JMI’s Anwar Jamal Kidwai Mass Communication and Research Centre. Still, it denied admission to students at the last moment without giving any reason.
The full list can be accessed below.
The university released a new list of selected candidates on September 12 at 8 pm, dropping 8 candidates from the list without citing any reason when candidates started complaining against their “biased” disqualification.
It is noteworthy that the new list is signed by the AJK MCRC director while the first list is signed by the controller of examination.
The students who were present at the university for admission and later denied told the media that the varsity has cancelled their candidature despite qualifying both written and interview.
“We arrived at the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre early in the morning to take admission. But the department kept us waiting till 3 pm. We contacted the office for admission and they said that the final list is yet to come from the controller of examination”, said a candidate who was denied admission on the condition of anonymity.
The candidate further said that “the notice which had been uploaded on August 11 is final as they called all the 19 students to come for admission and document verification. If that list was not final, why did they call us for document verification?”
Another candidate who didn’t wish to be named said that the AJK MCRC created the new list of selected candidates itself whereas the selection process is dealt by the controller of examination. “One of the office members pushed us out of the office and came out with a new list and dropped 8 candidates from the list without giving any explanation”.
Few people are also raising voice against the alleged scam on social media.
“Why are PHD students being denied admission in Jamia without any justification despite passing both written & interview test? @jmiu_official you are showing clear signs of a dictatorial & reckless administration! @jamiamillia_#jamia“, said Shreya, a Delhi University student.
Written exams and interviews are the only method through which students are selected for PhD courses in any central and state university. Candidates who have qualified NET/JRF are exempted from written tests and are only required to appear in interviews.
Candidates were invited by Jamia Millia Islamia to take admission to PhD at AJK MCRC for the 2021-22 session through a notice published on the varsity’s official website on August 11. The university had asked them to come on August 24 to take admission but later postponed twice and it finally invited the candidates to come between September 12, 2022, to September 14, 2022.
