Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke to the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine and condemned Russia’s invasion as expected.

On the third day of war, PM Modi ‘expressed his deep anguish’ over the Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the loss of lives and property in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy briefed Modi about the ongoing conflict with Russia and requested Modi to extend political support in United Nation Security Council.

“Spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Informed of the course of Ukraine repulsing Russia’s aggression”, Ukrainian President tweeted.

More than 100,000 invaders are on our land. They insidiously fire on residential buildings. Urged India to give us political support UN Security Council. Stop the aggressor together!”, he added.

“Prime Minister expressed his deep anguish about the loss of life and property due to the ongoing conflict.  He reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of violence and a return to dialogue, and expressed India’s willingness to contribute in any way towards peace efforts”, the Press Information Bureau quoted.

Prime Minister also conveyed India’s deep concern for the safety and security of Indian citizens, including students, present in Ukraine.  He sought facilitation by Ukrainian authorities to expeditiously and safely evacuate Indian citizens.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimar Putin had announced a ‘special military operation’ with the goal of demilitarizing Ukraine.

Earlier today, India abstained on a US-sponsored United Nations Security Council resolution that “deplores in the strongest terms Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, saying dialogue is the only answer to settling differences and disputes and voicing “regret” that the path of diplomacy was given up”, the Indian Express reported.

Meanwhile, Russia which presided the meeting at the UNSC as it sees the presidency for the month of February, vetoed the resolution. China on the other hand also abstained from along with United Arab Emirates.
