The students of Aligarh Muslim University on Friday took out a protest march against the custodial death of a 22-year-old Muslim youth in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj.

Hundreds of students gathered at the main gate of AMU and registered their protest and demanded a swift and unbiased investigation into the matter.

The students vehemently criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over worsening law and order in the state. One of the protesters said, “We demand an unbiased inquiry into the matter and the guilty should be given capital punishment.”

“The ruling Yogi government is normalising the custodial deaths by mere suspending officers and extending financial support to the family, but this is not justice, the student addressing the crowd said.

In a memorandum addressed to PM Narendra Modi, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and the NHRC, students asserted that “custodial murders have become another tool to oppress Muslims” and that the claims of Uttar Pradesh police that Altaf committed suicide are “full of loopholes”.

The students also alleged the UP Police that it had created pressure on Altaf’s family to give a statement favouring its claims.

Students demanded that a high-level, impartial inquiry be carried out to find the perpetrators of the murder.

Protestors handed over the memorandum to the CO Aligarh in the presence of the AMU proctor, Prof Wasim Ali, and other officials.

On Tuesday, Altaf was detained from his home for questioning about a kidnapping of a women. Later on, the boy was found dead under disbelieving circumstances. The police claimed that Altaf had committed suicide while he was in the washroom. Five policemen related to the matter were suspended.

Congress general secretary and party’s election campaign in-charge in Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi also targeted the Yogi led Uttar Pradesh government over its incapability of handling law and order in the state.
