Putin has declared that Russia will begin a military operation in Ukraine’s east. Putin has stated that Russia will launch a military operation in Donbas and has urged Ukraine’s military to lay down its arms.

He made a surprise speech on TV shortly before 8:30 am (03:00 GMT), saying, “I have made the choice of a military action”.

Putin stated that the measure was taken in reaction to threats from Ukraine. He went on to say that Russia has no intention of occupying Ukraine. Putin claimed that the Ukrainian “government” is to blame for the bloodshed.

Biden claimed that Russia alone is to blame for the “catastrophic loss of life and human misery” that would occur in the future, and that he will speak to the public on Thursday about the “consequences” for Russia.

Interfax reports that gunfire has been heard near Kyiv’s main airport

According to the Interfax news agency, gunfire was reported near Kyiv’s main airport, Boryspil, just after Russia announced a military campaign in Ukraine.

Shortly after Putin declared a special military campaign in eastern Ukraine, Ukraine’s UN envoy urged the Security Council to “end the war.”

“I’d like to request that the Russian delegation’s ambassador clarify on the record that your troops are not currently shelling or bombing Ukrainian cities, and that your troops are not marching towards Ukrainian territory,” he remarked.

“This isn’t termed a war, this is called a military operation in the Donbas,” Russia’s UN envoy responded.

According to Interfax Ukraine, Russian forces have landed in the southern port cities of Odessa and Mariupol after rocket attacks on military targets across Ukraine. The Boryspil airport in Kyiv was also evacuated, according to the report.

“Putin has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under strikes,” Kuleba tweeted. “This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win. The world can and must stop Putin. The time to act is now.”
