The passengers were returning from Ayodhya in the Sabarmati Express train when a fire broke out at Godhra railway station in Gujarat.
The incident is largely seen as the catalyst for the Gujarat riots that followed the train burning, resulting in extensive killings of Muslims, property devastation, and homelessness. According to the official records, 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed, taking the toll to 2,000.

Few days ago, The Kashmir Files, a highly controversial film directed by Vivek Agnihotri was released fueling sentiments against Kashmiri people for allegedly killing and displacing Kashmiri Hindus. The film earned around eight crore rupees in initial days.
The release fueled invoked emotions of uncountable Hindutva men requesting Agnihotri to make a film on Godhra and the likes issues.
A BJP member Gaurav Goes said that there shall be a movie on Godhra.
“I hope @vivekagnihotri makes a movie on the Godhra train burning. 70 innocent men, women, and children were burnt to ashes and their story methodically erased from the nation’s narrative by an alliance of Islamists, media and the international NGO industry”, wrote another user.
Another twitter user wished the film earn 100 crores and so that more directors & producers can come forward to tell our stories. like:- Godhra Train burn, Moplah Genocide, Direct Action Day, Delhi riots, etc.”
