In the most recent development, Ukraine has formally requested Elon Musk to “grant us your internet connection via Starlink company.”

Elon Musk said today that his business SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service has been enabled in Ukraine, after a request from a Kyiv official for the tech mogul to give stations to his war-ravaged country.

“Starlink service is now operational in Ukraine,” Musk tweeted, adding that “additional terminals are on the way.”

The post occurred around 10 hours after Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov requested Musk to supply Starlink services to Ukraine, which had been invaded by neighbouring Russia.

“While you try to colonize Mars — Russia tries to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space — Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people! We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations,” Fedorov had tweeted addressing Musk.

Responding to the minister’s tweet Musk tweeted, “Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route.”

Internet access in Ukraine has been hampered by the Russian invasion, notably in the country’s south and east, where combat has been fierce, Internet Monitors reported on Saturday.

While satellite technology is highly expensive to deploy, it can give internet access to those who live in remote or difficult-to-reach areas where fiber-optic cables and cell towers do not reach. When communication is disrupted by hurricanes or other natural catastrophes, the technology might be a lifeline.

Musk stated on January 15 that SpaceX had 1,469 Starlink satellites online and another 272 on their way to operational orbits.
