Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard donated the outdoor-apparel company to help combat climate change.

Chouinard said he transferred ownership of the 1973-founded, $3 billion-valued business to a nonprofit organisation.

All corporate income of the company will be donated to climate change, biodiversity, and wild land programmes.

Mr. Chouinard's wife and two adult children are also donating to the cause.

Mr. Chouinard wrote a letter titled "Earth is now our sole stakeholder" and posted it on Patagonia website.

Mr. Chouinard wrote, "If we have any hope of a thriving planet—much less a business—it is going to take all of us doing what we can with the resources we have. This is what we can do."

"Truth be told, there were no good options available. So, we created our own," he further said.
