Rock made a joke on Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, which resulted in an on-stage confrontation that prompted gasps from the audience.
As a presenter at the 94th Academy Awards, Chris Rock may have gotten more than he bargained for. According to sources, when presenting the award for Best Documentary Feature, which went to Questlove’s Summer of Soul, he made a joke on Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, which resulted in an on-stage confrontation that prompted gasps from the audience.
“I love you, Jada. I can’t wait to watch G.I. Jane 2,” Rock stated, referring to Pinkett Smith’s appearance in the film.
Following Rock’s remark, Will Smith appeared to be giggling. But, at the Dolby, he surprised the audience by storming the stage and smacking Rock in the face. “Wow,” Rock said out of shock. “Will Smith just smacked the s**t out of me.”
When Smith returned to his seat, his statements were bleeped, but it was clear that he warned Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***king mouth.”
“Wow, man. “It was a G.I. Jane joke,” Rock explained.
“Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth,” Smith said again as the crowd fell silent, according to eyewitnesses.
Pinkett Smith’s look in the film is due to alopecia, an autoimmune illness that causes hair loss by attacking hair follicles, which she has been open about.
Rock later approached the Smiths to apologise, according to sources, and Denzel Washington got involved.
The event seemed all the stranger, given that Smith was nominated tonight for his role in Warner Bros.’ sports drama King Richard and would later return to the stage to accept the award for Best Actor.
In the immediate aftermath, presenter P. Diddy declared, “Will, Chris, we’re going to fix things like a family at the gold party. For the time being, we’ll keep moving forward with love.”
Later, when Smith came to accept the award for Best Actor, he opted to speak with Rock about the situation. He cried as he added, “I want to apologise to The Academy; I want to apologise to all of my fellow nominees. I’m hoping to get invited back to the Academy. “However, it’s worth noting that Smith did not apologise to Rock on stage.
In his speech, instead of apologising to Rock, he referred to what happened to Richard Williams, the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena, whom he played in the film King Richard. “Richard Williams was a zealous protector of his family members.
“I am overwhelmed by what God is asking me to do and be in this world at this time in my life,” Smith said. “I got to defend Aunjanue Ellis, who is one of the strongest, most sensitive women I’ve ever met, while making this film. Saniyya [Sidney] and Demi [Singleton], who played Venus and Serena [Williams], I’m being asked to love and defend others, and to be a river to my people.
“I understand that to do what we do, you have to be able to endure abuse and have people gossip about you. In this job, you have to be able to put up with people insulting you and smile and seem as if it’s not a big deal,” he continued. “Denzel stated to me only a few seconds ago, ‘Be careful at your highest moment.’ that’s when the devil comes for you.’ “However, I’d like to be a conduit for love.”
