Yogi Adityanath ’s Claim of ‘No Riot’ in Uttar Pradesh is False; Look at NCRB Stats

Yogi Adityanath has always claimed that there has been no riot in Uttar Pradesh since he took charge of India’s most populated state in 2017. And the claim is something that he has been using as most powerful weapon against his nearest rival Akhilesh Singh’s Samajwadi Party in his political rallies ahead of Uttar Pradesh elections.

“Since the BJP government came in 2017, riots have stopped in the state. The Kanwar Yatra, which was stopped, has started again. Now no one can become a threat to the safety of sisters and daughters here”, Yogi Adityanath said in Meerut earlier in January.

But the question on his claim that there have been zero riots in Uttar Pradesh is far from reality as his own government has booked as many as 29738 people under the charges of riots from 2017 to 2020.

It is fact that the number of riots has been decreased since 2017 on an average if compared to national average, but to maintain that no riots have reported is nothing but rhetoric. From 2017, cases of riots were dipped by 25% in Uttar Pradesh; while 10% decrease was reported in same cases during the same period at national level.

Another interpretation from his claim can be made that all the 29738 people who were booked during Yogi’s reign is falsely implicated, which is worst than having actual riots on earth.

Zakir Ali of Lallanpost has done stretching research over Yogi’s claim and gone through National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) statistics where he found that total 29,738 cases related to riots have been registered in Uttar Pradesh between 2017 to 2020.

Statistics of NCRB says riots including communal riots in Uttar Pradesh has decreased on an average but still UP is third after Maharashtra and Bihar in terms of highest number of riots.

According to the NCRB stats, in 2017, total 8990 riots related cases were registered while in 2018, 8908 cases were registered in Uttar Pradesh. The number of riots in 2019 fell by little under 3200 to 5714. In 2020, total 6126 riots related cases were registered taking the tally to 29,738 in four years.

As of Now, the NCRB has not issued the data of 2021.
